Taxi Workers Survey Highlights

Recently the Los Angeles Taxi Workers Alliance (LATWA) conducted a survey on the working conditions of Taxi Workers in Los Angeles.  The results were presented at a Taxi Workers town hall meeting on July 30, 2005 at the UCLA Downtown Labor Center.  Although Taxi workers are in the thousands in Los Angeles, this first time effort reflects a small percentage.  We hope to gather more information from you.  We need your support to fight for the rights of all Taxi workers……..

AVERAGE AGE: 48 YEARS
AVERAGE TIME DRIVING CAB: 9 YEARS
AVERAGE WORK HOURS: 12 HRS & 45 MINS per DAY
AVERAGE WORK WEEK: 6 ½ DAY per WEEK
AVERAGE LEASE:

$ 455 per WEEK
AVERAGE INCOME: $ 594 per WEEK

HEALTH CONDITIONS:

  Poor or Less than Good health: 69%
  Stress Daily or a Few Times a week: 90%
  No health Insurance: 61%

AIRPORT POLICE HARASSMENT:

  Neck Tie Enforcement: 95%
  Check Engine Light: 100%
  Racist Comments: 70%

ATS HARASSMENT: 

  Neck Tie Enforcement: 93%
  Check Engine Light: 83%
  Racist Comments: 67%

DRESS CODE:

  Neck Tie is a hazard on the Job: 87%

BELIEVE WE NEED TO ORGANIZE TO FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS: 91%
