POSITION: Bangla speaking Community Advocate
HOURS: Part Time

South Asian Network (SAN) is a
grassroots community-based non-profit organization based in Artesia, CA
dedicated to promoting the health, empowerment and solidarity of persons
of South Asian origin living in Southern California. SAN was founded in
1990 to provide an open forum where individuals of South Asian origin
could gather to discuss social, economic and political issues affecting
the community, with the goal of raising awareness and active involvement
and advocacy among community members. Together, staff and volunteers
have established the only staffed agency in Southern California serving
South Asians and have created a multilingual, culturally appropriate
program of direct service, community education and advocacy in five
areas: immigration, public health, domestic violence, hate
crimes/discrimination and civil liberties.
The health unit at SAN is CHAI:
Community Health Action Initiative program promotes healthy living
through education, empowerment, and access to health care for South
Asians families and individuals in Southern California. CHAI is looking
to hire part-time Bangla speaking community advocate.
Position Responsibilities
-
Contact South Asian community advocates,
religious and social leaders.
-
Identify areas for outreach for target
population.
-
Conduct outreach in the South Asian community.
-
Conducts home assessments of clients identified
as CHAI clients.
-
Be aware of culturally sensitive issues within
the community and act appropriately.
-
Responsible for extensive outreach and advocacy
to South Asian clients.
-
Have a thorough understanding of the attitudes,
knowledge and beliefs of the South Asian community.
-
Participate in trainings / meetings and
conferences whenever required.
-
Maintain confidentiality of clients.
-
Educate/inform community on SAN’s services.
-
Team building should be a priority.
-
Report to the Project Coordinator and provide
detailed feedback on barriers, constraints and successes.

Be open to learning new technology as and when
required.

Assist SAN internal staff with general office
maintenance, fundraising, media relations and other administrative
duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Completion of high school, and knowledge of South
Asian community.
-
Excellent communication skills.
-
Basic computer knowledge is required. Data entry
skills highly desired.

Frequent local travel and reliable transportation
required. Valid CA driver’s license.

Fluency in at least one South Asian language
preferred as well as some level of fluency in English (verbal and
written).

Ability to work flexible hours (including some
evenings and weekends) and occasional travel to meetings and
conferences as needed.

Dedication to working to advocate for the
community with knowledge of South Asian cultures. Ability to work
with diverse people.
