POSITION: Community Advocate
(Awaz – Voices Against Violence Unit)
HOURS: Part-time
START: Position to begin immediately
SAN is a grassroots
community-based non-profit organization based in Artesia, CA dedicated
to promoting the health, empowerment and solidarity of persons of South
Asian origin living in Southern California. SAN was founded in 1990 to
provide an open forum where individuals of South Asian origin could
gather to discuss social, economic and political issues affecting the
community, with the goal of raising awareness and active involvement and
advocacy among community members. Together, staff and volunteers have
established the only staffed agency in Southern California serving South
Asians and have created a multilingual, culturally appropriate program
of direct service, community education and advocacy in five areas:
immigration, public health, domestic violence, hate
crimes/discrimination and civil liberties.
The anti-violence unit at SAN
is Awaz: Voices Against Violence. We provide non-residential case
management services, counseling, support groups, and art healing
workshops to survivors of domestic violence. We also maintain contacts
and build coalitions with other community-based organizations, service
providers, law enforcement, and other groups to improve the coordinated
response to all survivors of domestic violence, especially immigrant
survivors.
Position Responsibilities

Work with Unit staff in
planning and conducting outreach and workshops at South Asian sites
of congregation.

Provide case management,
advocacy and support to survivors of violence and their children.

Assist Unit staff in
managing SAN’s client and crisis calls at the office.
-
Assist in organizing and
conducting weekly support groups for survivors of violence.
-
Assist in
coordinating/writing grant narrative report and proposals for
respective grants.
-
Developing and
dissemination of culturally and linguistically appropriate
communication material into South Asian community.
-
Represent SAN in community
based settings, coalition meetings, forums/conferences etc.
-
Implement surveys within
South Asian communities and analyze data collected.
-
Engage in coalition
building with Domestic Violence shelters, Transitional houses and
other service providers.
-
Assist Unit staff in
articulating policy that reflects the intersections between Violence
against Women and other State/Federal policies.

Keep up to date on current
development and trends of domestic violence and abuse.

Assist in coordinating
activities such as workshops, presentations and outreach events with
other units.

Assist SAN internal staff
with fundraising, media relations, conducting surveys and other
administrative duties as needed.
Position Requirements
-
BSW or related degree.
-
Experience in grant report
and proposal writing highly desirable.

Persons should be willing
to provide case management services to the clients of domestic
violence after receiving the 40 hour mandatory training arranged by
SAN.

Knowledge and skill on
developing communication material and campaigns for South Asian
community would be preferable.
-
Knowledge of and
sensitivity to issues affecting survivors of domestic violence,
their families and community. South Asian Bi-Lingual and/or
bi-cultural knowledge preferred.

Ability to work with
diverse cultures, community and professional groups.

Ability to work some
evenings and some weekends.

Ability to work
independently using sound judgment and decision-making skills.

Excellent speaking,
writing, and listening skills.

Must have valid California
driver's license, insurance, and automobile that may be used during
working hours.

Ability to support the
mission and philosophy of South Asian Network.
