Volunteer & Donation Info

South Asians in Southern California consist of among others, Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, and Nepalese; Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains and Buddhists; speakers of dozens of different South Asian languages; and multiple generations of immigrants. But this diverse community is also defined by the numerous divisions that run through it. Recognizing the diversities that characterize and often divide the South Asian community - religion, nationality, language, class, gender, sexual orientation, and generational difference - SAN is committed to working across these dimensions to strengthen the South Asian community and form alliances with all communities in Southern California.

Region & Population Served: For more than a decade, SAN has been dedicated to promoting the health and empowerment of South Asians living in Southern California. While South Asian immigrants are frequently assumed to be doctors and engineers, this "model minority" myth ignores the area's large and growing number of low-income South Asians. The majority of SAN clients live at or below the federal poverty level, and over 40% lack health care insurance. This population is further marginalized by the lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate health education and health care programs within mainstream health care agencies, as well as those that are focused on providing service and assistance to the Asian/Pacific Islander communities. This service gap is especially disturbing given the significant growth of South Asians in Southern California. In Los Angeles County alone, the South Asian population grew 138% from 1980 to 1990 (the 2000 U.S. Census is expected to indicate similar or greater growth in the past decade).

Health Outreach: Conduct awareness and prevention education in the various South Asian communities for issues like Breast Cancer, Tobacco, HIV /AIDS, Low cost health insurance and other related issues that the South Asian community faces.

Domestic Violence: Work as victims advocate to assist South Asian women and children who are victims of Domestic Violence by accompanying them to court appearances, meetings with lawyers, language assistance and to the offices of the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) and to answer help line calls. SAN will provide requisite training provided volunteers are willing to sign a two-year commitment.

Hate Crime / Anti Discrimination: Volunteers will be expected to be involved in advocacy and education for the various South Asian Communities. Outreach and education campaigns will be conducted to help South Asians recognize a hate crime or hate incident and inform them of their rights and resources as a victim of a hate crime/ incident.

Fundraising: Volunteers are needed to conduct fund raising activities for SAN.

Legal Assistance: SAN is actively looking for attorneys in various fields of law to help clients with their legal concerns. SAN conducts free Immigration / Citizenship workshops periodically throughout the year and welcome attorneys willing to participate and help with these applications. In addition we are also actively seeking much needed assistance from Civil Rights and Family Law Attorneys to assist our clients who are victims of hate crimes or domestic violence.

Translators: If you are a South Asian who is fluent in one or more South Asian languages and would like to volunteer your services as a translator please contact us immediately. SAN needs volunteers like you to help clients with translation or interpretation the phone & to translate educational material for Hate Crimes, Domestic Violence and Health Assistance into several South Asian Languages.

Professional Services: If you would like to donate your professional service as a Doctor, Lawyer, Mental Health Professional or in any other capacity, please call SAN.

Special Events: SAN holds several meetings throughout the year eg: Community Town Hall Forums, Workshops etc when we need extra help during these events and especially during our annual fundraiser.
