Board & Staff The board, staff and volunteers are the most diverse and representative of any South Asian organization. Comprised of a majority of women, the team includes persons of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and Nepalese origin from Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist traditions; first-generation immigrants and first-generation American-born; speakers of Hindi, Bangla, Nepali, Gujarati, Urdu and Sinhala; and gay and heterosexual members. Such internal diversity enables SAN to outreach to a broad set of communities. Each member brings a set of complementary competencies and methodologies for community building including background in public health, civil rights law, economic development and community education. The agency's commitment to internal diversity mirrors a broader commitment to equality in Southern California. SAN has ensured that on issues from hate crimes to immigration to public health, it works in coalition with other local agencies working on immigrants' rights, people of color, and poverty agencies. While maintaining a strong volunteer base, SAN has built organizational infrastructure over the past several years in order to expand outreach and organizing efforts into the community. Staff currently consists of two Program Coordinators (one each for community health and violence prevention), eight community advocates and an administrative associate. The Executive Director is a full-time volunteer. Other volunteers include community members from varied backgrounds with a rich experience in migration and understanding of community nuances.
